cafeofangels (stylized in lowercase) is an ambient and electronic music project by Canadian musician 8lak3_, and is one of several projects released through Bebo Records. Initially conceived as an ambient counterpart to Aubrey's rap persona 8lak3_, cafeofangels gradually expanded into an interconnected fictional universe centered around the rural setting of Angel County.

2024-2025: Early Development   [edit source]

The project title and handle cafeofangels existed for about a year before any music was released. Aubrey originally conceived it as a quieter project to explore slower, drone-based soundscapes, field recordings, and imagery that did not fit the sound profile of 8lak3_.

Early work focused heavily on developing a visual and narrative backdrop centered on the fictional setting of Signal Ridge and later, Angel County. Over time, Aubrey began adopting the alias cafeofangels personally, intentionally blurring the line between the artist and the fictional world's narrator.

2025: Glow Again single   [edit source]

The project debuted publicly with the single "Glow Again". The release introduced its foundational sound, combining ambient textures, shoegaze guitars, and slowcore elements, while establishing core thematic motifs surrounding memory, place, and identity.

2026-present: odessa and id look better with angel wings...   [edit source]

On May 27, 2026, cafeofangels released its debut EP, odessa. The EP significantly broadened the project's worldbuilding, pairing songs with interactive websites, fictional wiki entries, and photographs designed to resemble archived records from Angel County.

Later in 2026, the project released the dark ambient album id look better with angel wings; im too scared to do anything meaningful and anything i try to do, turns out to be meaningless under the shortened artist moniker angel. The 6-track, 42-minute release featured collaborations with vaporwave artist microsoftgolf under the aliases "golfer" and "winona".

Musical Style   [edit source]

cafeofangels incorporates elements of ambient, dark ambient, shoegaze, plunderphonics, slowcore, and drone. Tracks often rely on atmospheric field recordings, stretched guitar textures, and non-traditional song structures.

Thematically, the project deals with memory, grief, rural isolation, abandoned infrastructure, and religious symbolism. Visual aesthetics are central to the project's presentation, often presented as recovered documents, old photographs, or municipal files.

Although cafeofangels is a real-world musical project, much of the music and visual material functions as an in-universe archive documenting the fictional region of Angel County.

Hunter   [edit source]

Within the fictional setting, Hunter serves as the primary point-of-view character.

Named after the name Aubrey was originally intended to receive at birth, Hunter functions as a fictionalized counterpart rather than a direct representation of the artist. The project intentionally leaves it unclear whether Hunter is documenting Angel County, living within it, or simply remembering it.

Many releases are written from Hunter's perspective, with songs referencing personal experiences alongside wider events occurring throughout the fictional town and the surrounding county.

Angel County serves as the central setting for the project's universe. Rather than presenting a straightforward, linear narrative, listeners are encouraged to piece together the region's history through interconnected songs, photos, websites, and archival records.

God's Favorite   [edit source]

"God's Favorite" is a recurring motif across the project's lyrics, visual design, and merchandise. The phrase explores ideas of faith, guilt, belonging, and identity. While religious imagery appears frequently within cafeofangels, it is generally presented as symbolism.

The motif also reflects the project's settings with small-town churches, roadside crosses, youth groups, and communities whose identities are shaped by religion.
